They heard me on a tape, it was the Pathways Theatre project. The tape had been passed on god knows who, anyhow, they hunted me down and heard that I had a regular slot at the Planet in Coventry on Tuesday and Thursday nights, singing my own music and covers and creating a bit of a free and easy. It was a bit of a wild gig, sometimes people would get up and dance to just me and my guitar and they'd be so enthusiastic, fueled by booze ofcourse that they'd dance into my mike stand and then me! I nearly had my teeth knocked out once. There was sometimes heckeling and I thought I might put up some chicken wire. I was all on my own, a one woman show. It was going so well, I was building up a loyal audience, when the manager (renowned for doing runners), did a runner! End of gigs! Consequently Fox and Gus just missed me...they had no number or address for me either. I had a regular restaurant gig singing covers for Kev Granningan. I was in there one night mid-week when this couple sat in the window seat where I had set my PA up. I told them not to move, they made the place look busy from the outside. (I needed that job). The Guy happend to be Fox. He had no idea who I was until I started singing. Apparently he said to his girlfriend "that's her" and merrily skipped off to the phonebox to tell Gus who said, "offer her money, get her in the studio!" |
